Dig a hole, twice as big as the plant pot, place the plant in the bottom of the hole, backfill gently with soil and water in well. Mulch with an organic mulch, such as bark chips, sugar cane or pea straw and water in well. How to grow buddleia in a pot Choose a pot at least mm wide and deep. Position in full sun to semi-shade and protect from strong winds. Growing tips Available as deciduous or evergreen and in a range of beautiful flower colours.

Carry out routine trimming after flowering to help keep the plants tidy. Propagate from semi-hardwood cuttings in summer.

As the plant grows, increase the pot size by inches. Trust us, you and the plant will be much happier increasing the pot size as it grows instead of putting it in a large pot right away!

Butterfly bush grows best in well-draining soils, whether it is in a garden bed or container! Ensure your pots have large drainage holes in the bottom.

Avoid using gravel, rocks, or sand at the bottom of the pot to improve drainage; it's a myth! All you need is lightweight commercial potting soil. Buddleia loves to bask in the sun, so make sure you put your pot in a spot with full sun more than 6 hours sun a day. If your plant isn't receiving enough sun, you can expect fewer flowers and sparse foliage. If you notice it isn't getting enough light, don't worry; containers are easy to move!

It will, but they're not great container subjects - there's a smaller, dwarf version that might be worth looking for - this seems to cope better with the containment. If you have little room, why are you thinking of planting a Buddleja anyway? They can get huge and quite unsightly very quickly. Is there a smaller plant that would suit your purposes instead?

I have 2 Buddleias both in tall deep pots about 2 foot from the house wall. They've both done really well. The pots are about 60cms high and about 45cms across. The buddleias need quite a lot of water and feed, I use tomato fertiliser but I alternate with general purpose stuff. This is the first year I've had them, very successful so far and the butterflies have arrived in legions! Larger Buddleja cultivars will only last a few years in a pot, even a large one.

The solution is to grow a new one from cuttings about every third year.
